Sula is Frøya’s oldest church site. It is believed that there has been a church here since the 15th century, but the first written sources mentioning the church date back to the Reformation of 1589. Sula Chapel was built in 1925 and is still actively used by both residents and visitors. You can visit the chapel year-round, as the church is always open.
Sula was once an important fishing village with around 500 permanent residents. In recent years, it has experienced significant depopulation, and today the island has about 60 residents. Sula Lighthouse bears witness to the village’s historical importance. The first lighthouse dates back to 1793, but the current lighthouse was built in 1909 on the island’s highest point, Sulahaugen, 35 meters above sea level. The lighthouse station was automated and depopulated in 1974. The lighthouse keeper’s house is now used for accommodation.
The White Town in the Sea
The small fishing village of Sula is also called the White Town in the Sea. It offers space for peace of mind, personal exploration, or enjoying the company of a local host who can show you around the island.
Sula has a lively community, with both permanent residents and many holiday homes used throughout the year. There is a wide range of activities and experiences, with the shop serving as the central gathering point. There is much to see and do in Sula, including a beautiful guest harbor, a fishing village museum, several studios and galleries, a pub, a restaurant with a concert pier, and multiple accommodation options.

How to get to Sula
There are daily ferry calls to Sula from the ferry quay at Dyrøy, Frøya. We recommend checking atb.no for updated boat schedules.
Note that there are two different stops: either the ferry quay at Sula, or Sula Express Boat Quay, which brings you directly to the settlement and key site. From Sula ferry quay, it is about a 2 km walk into the island.
