As early as the 1100s, sælehus (early self-service lodging) were established on the mountain passes to make crossing the mountains safer for travelers. These shelters gradually developed into mountain lodges, and Kongsvold Fjeldstue was granted official status as a mountain lodge in 1670.

Originally, Kongsvold was located two kilometers further north in Drivdalen, but after a landslide damaged one of the buildings in 1710, it was moved to its present location. The name was given by Frederick IV of Denmark in 1704, when he visited Kongsvold on his coronation journey to Nidaros.

In December 1718, during the Great Northern War, Kongsvold and the other mountain lodges across Dovrefjell were burned to the ground by Norwegian soldiers. This was done to prevent General Armfeldt and the Caroleans from crossing the mountains. Kongsvold was rebuilt in 1720, and the oldest buildings on the site date from this period. Much has happened since then, and Kongsvold has developed from a simple coaching station into a comfortable mountain lodge.

Today, Kongsvold offers accommodation in 32 rooms with private shower and WC. The lodge has a dining hall seating 72 guests, a fireplace lounge, and sitting rooms. The kitchen is renowned for its excellent cuisine, and Kongsvold Fjeldstue has received several awards for its culinary standards. It is also featured in several cookbooks, including “50 Best Places to Eat and Stay in Scandinavia.”

Since the summer of 2020, the hotel has been operated by Frich's, which continues to welcome guests and pilgrims to beautiful Kongsvold. Frich’s will also reopen "Kroa" for both travelers by road and hikers during the summer season.

Kongsvold offers dedicated pilgrim accommodation: two four-bed rooms with shower and WC in the corridor and access to a small kitchen for pilgrims, as well as two double rooms. In addition, there is a smaller house with two bedrooms, each with a bunk bed, and shared shower/WC facilities; however, there are no cooking facilities in this house.

All pilgrims are, of course, warmly welcome to purchase meals at the hotel.

Lunch can be purchased at our Kro during high season when it is open; at other times, it is available in the hotel restaurant.

Dinner is served every evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

A fixed three-course menu is offered, and we recommend reserving a table in advance unless you have booked a stay that includes dinner – in that case, a table is automatically reserved.
