Borgleden goes through the south eastern part of Norway, leading to Oslo. It winds through lush cultural landscape, with cultural and historical points of interest lined up one after another.

Borgleden takes you from the Swedish border through Østfold and towards Oslo, where the trail connects with Gudbrandsdalsleden which continues to Trondheim. Borgleden offers forests, cultural landscapes, beautiful sceneries, rivers. lakes and small towns along the trail. 

How to do a pilgrimage on Borgleden?

Along the trail you will find many different accommodations small and large farms, pilgrimhostels, hotels in the cities, outdoor shelter or apartments/cabins at campsites.

Borgleden offers beautiful nature and history, from the Bronze Age to the industrial history of the 1800s. Along the stages, you will pass places where exciting and dramatic things have happened that have influenced our common history. In addition, during your walk you will pass 18 churches, 6 of them medieval churches.

At all the churches along the trail you will find a pilgrim bench where there is the opportunity for a break. At the bench there is a postbox with information and a rubber-stamp. You can also refill your water bottle from the water tap at the cemeteries.

The trail is well marked, but it could be a god thing to bring a map and a compass. The main season for pilgrimage in Norway in general is from June 1st to September 1st, on Borgleden you can walk from early spring to late autumn. Some accommodations may be closed before mid-April and after September.

Borgarsyssel museum in Sarpsborg is a great place to visit on your pilgrimage.
Make sure you check out the sculpture of the young Olav Haraldsson while visiting Sarpsborg.

Where do I buy the pilgrim passport?

Here you'll find a list of places where you can can buy the pilgrim passport. On the walk you can collect stamps in the passport at pilgrim hostels and churches. 

Where do I sleep along the way?

You can stay at hotels, farms who offer acommodation, and campsites. We recommend that you book accommodation a few days before you arrive at the property.

Are there open churches along Borgleden?

There are several beautiful churches along the trail, but unfortunately not all churches are open. If you meet a closed door, please check if there is any information available nearby, as many congregations will open the church outside opening hours for pilgrims.

How is the terrain on Borgleden?

It varies between carriageways, trails and long streches of asphalts. Read more on how to prepare and choose the right equipment for your pilgrimage.

What footwear should I choose?

We recommend that pilgrims wear hiking boots with good cushioning and durability. Some choose mountain boots, others prefer Gore-Tex or technical running shoes. Some bring sandals with them in addition to shoes.

Is Borgleden well marked?

The signposting is fairly good. However, we recommend that you bring a map and compass.
