The dead ice pits in Jordbrudalen

Situated along Gudbrandsdalsleden
The dead ice pits in Jordbrudalen is both a natural and a cultural monument. The name “Jordbrudalen” indicates that there has been an old road here, and reflects the fact that there has probably been a bridge of soil between the pits in the valley.

The pits were formed by ice at the end of the last ice age. Some blocks of ice were left behind after the active glacier had receded, so-called "dead ice". These blocks of ice were covered by sand and gravel, and in this way they were protected from the rising temperatures. This meant that it took took longer for this ice to melt and over time they created these pits.
