The small town of Dovre is located north in Gudbrandsdalen by the entrance to Dovrefjell, and is the administrative center for the municipality of the same name
Dovre is located south of Dovrefjell and has given name to the spectacular mountain range. The river Gudbrandsdalslågen runs through this mountain town.
The municipality is part of Oppland county and has 2516 inhabitants (2025). Dovre municipality has historically been an agricultural municipality. There are still many who works in agriculture and forestry, but trade, transport and tourism has now become the leading industries.
The entire municipality lies above 440 meters above sea level, with the highest peaks in Dovrefjell (Snøhetta, 2,286 meters above sea level) and Rondane (Rondeslottet, 2,178 meters above sea level).
The municipal coat of arms refers to the fact that there is a permanent, wild population of musk ox here.
