Lesja iron works emerged during the 1660s. At the end of the 17th century, the mining community decided to build a church. The iron works was established in the eastern part of the lake Lesjaskogvatnet, and the area was named after the works - Lesjaverk. It was also here that the church was built in 1695. The activity at the iron works declined during the end of the 18th century and stoped completely by 1812. Some time after this, questions were raises about the location of the church and in 1848 it was relocated to the other end of the lake, to Lesjaskog. In 1855 the church was inaugurated for the second time.
