Before the construction of railways, Lake Mjøsa was an important transport route. On old maps the routes on the lake are drawn in the same way as the roads on land. Many pilgrims probably used Mjøsa as a waterway. Tradition says that there was a hostel on the island Hovinsholm at Helgøya where pilgrims sleep before continuing on foot or by boat.
