On the trail

The name, Sel, means "quiet" and it comes from the fact that the river Lågen quietens down when it runs through the area. This used to be the center of the village, where the old road from the west meets the main road between Oslo and Trondheim. In this old junction you'll find Nord-Sel Church.

From early on in medieval times there stood a stave church here that was dedicated to St. Olav. With time, the church was in such a bad state that it was replaced by a new church in 1630. But during the 17 century, the copper workshop was established further south gave competition to the village and eventually, in 1738, the church was moved down to the workshop. For almost 200 years there was no church in the area, but in 1932 Nord-Sel Church was built.

Inside the church there is an altarpiece that stands out from the rest of the interior. It was made in 1681 and is cut in a Cartilage Baroque style by a wood cutter from Vang in Hedemark; Johannes Skråstad.

In the cemetery there is a separate area for English soldiers who was killed in the area during The Second World War.

Utside the church gates there is a sculpture of Kristin Lavransdatter. It is made by Kari Rolfsen in 1982.
