Rusasetvatnet

Situated along Kystpilegrimsleia
The Rusasetvatnet (lake) is the largest restoration project of fresh water lakes and wetlands throughout Norwegian history. An essential stop for all visitors to Ørland.

Rusasetvatnet (lake) was for many hundreds of years strongly connected to Austrått, as the manor's food source, among other things. Here, there was hunting and pike fishing, and the dam in the water provided water for the mill that was located where Dalebakken Mill is today.

Today, this is the most popular outdoor area in Ørland after the restoration of Rusasetvatnet was completed. Hiking trails link the various key places such as Austråttparken, Rusasetvatnet and Austråttlunden. The Rusaset area was once important for outdoor life and recreational area for the local comunity. Ørland's largest lake at the foot of Rusasetfjellet offered fishing and wildlife. The damming of Rusasetvatnet was done in the 17th century to establish the mill business during the heyday of Austrått. The water level covered at its hight an area of as much as 400 acres. The water was drained through various interventions in the 1980s and 90s.
