The first church by Wilhelm von Hanno (built in 1854-1859) burned down as early as 1861. The church, which was completed in 1863, was partly erected on the old walls. Sarpsborg Church replaced the slate roof with solar panels in 2019.

A recurring use of symbols in the church is aimed at the city's founder, St. Olav. With his axe and crown, he is depicted in the stained-glass window between the porch and the nave, and small Olav's sculptures can be found at the top of the large chandeliers. At the bottom of the baptismal dish and on the baptismal jug is engraved the St. Olav's mark, a cross flanked by two axes.

The only things that were rescued from the burning church in 1861 were the ritual vessels and the sandstone baptismal font that can be seen in the church to this day.

Originally, a cemetery was originally built in the entire block around the church, but today only two gravestones remain. Today it is a park with fantastic flower splendour where 8000 perennials and 52,000 bulbs have been planted. Here it is nice to take a break, experience the scent of flowers and a bustling insect life.
