Swords in Rock

At Hafrsfjord, you will encounter the iconic Swords in Rock, the monument that marks the site where, according to Norse tradition, King Harald Fairhair united Norway into one kingdom. The three towering swords symbolize peace, unity, and freedom, and have become an enduring icon of both the region and Norwegian history.

Created by the artist Fritz Røed, the monument was unveiled by King Olav V in 1983. 

For pilgrims following the Coastal Pilgrim Route, Swords in Rock is a natural destination on the approach to Stavanger Cathedral.
