Church
Vilnes church
Situated along Kystpilegrimsleia - the coastal pilgrim route
Vilnes Church on Atløy is a beautiful medieval wooden church from 1674, and is the oldest wooden church in Sunnfjord. It is believed that Vilnes was a place of sacrifice in ancient times. Three large standing stones near the church may have been used in such a context.
There is a legend about the standing stones: Jorunn in Alden was supposed to get married in Vilnes Church. Then the trolls Trond in Alden, Sjur in Atløynipa and Mass in Einingsfjellet are said to have thrown large boulders to crush the church. But the stones missed and remained standing in the field west of the church. It is a strange phenomenon that the three standing stones together with the church form a cross mark. There is also a small stone cross by the church on Vilnes. This comes from the quarry in Hyllestad.
