Vuku Church

This red, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1654 after the drawings of architects Ole Johnsen Hindrum and Olluff Johnson Kirchebygger. The church can room about 200 people.

Vuku church from 1654 is a long church with a rectangular nave and a somewhat narrower and lower chancel. At the west end of the nave there is a ridged roof. A two-storey porch was added to the west in 1812. On the north side of the choir is a sacristy. The church is of timber with red-painted board cladding on the outside. The church replaced an earlier stave church on the site and several parts are said to have been reused.

The interior bears the mark of the renovation in 1846. The walls and ceiling were decorated by Erik Pedersen Walne. The east wall of the nave is decorated with illusionistic perspective compositions with the four evangelists on balconies between rows of columns. In the choir are the virtues; hope and faith illusionistically painted as marble figures in temple niches. The altarpiece is from 1699 and is richly decorated with the crucifixion in the main field, flanked by twisted columns and carved figures of John the Baptist and Moses. The wings have medallions, foliage and mimics. At the top, the resurrection is painted flanked by carved figures of Paul and Peter.
