The church at Nøtterøy is shaped like a cross, its west nave and the tower base stems from the original church built around year 1100.
The church was first expanded towards the east in 1839, then in 1883. These adaptions were made to cater for a growing parish and the new emerging style, and it completely changed the appearance of the church. A lot of its interior was made in 1883, this including the altar and the pulpit.
