Trondheim Pilgrim Center
Welcome to Trondheim – the pilgrimage capital where all paths meet. We warmly welcome pilgrims from near and far to Nidaros, the final destination of a journey shaped by nature, culture, and reflection.
The Regional Pilgrim Center Trondheim provides up-to-date information and guidance for those planning or undertaking a pilgrimage. We offer advice on route choices, accommodation, transport, and local experiences, as well as insights into the cultural history along the routes. Our aim is to help ensure a safe, meaningful, and rewarding pilgrimage—from beginning to end.
The Pilgrimage Capital and Our Region
For centuries, Trondheim has been the most important pilgrimage destination in the Nordic region and is today known as Norway’s pilgrim capital. Here, history and the present meet in a vibrant city surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and small local communities, all carrying traces of the long tradition of pilgrims.
Along the routes, one encounters a rich interplay between nature, cultural heritage, and local hospitality—from open mountains and quiet forests to farms, churches, and small villages. The journey culminates at Nidaros Cathedral, which since the Middle Ages has been the destination for pilgrims from across the Nordic countries and Europe.
Areas of Work
The Pilgrim Center works broadly with the development of the pilgrim routes as both cultural heritage and a societal resource, in close cooperation with hosts along the routes in our region. This includes:
- developing the pilgrim routes as a sustainable and forward-looking form of tourism
- safeguarding and promoting historic routes and paths
- communicating Norway’s cultural diversity along the routes
- strengthening the pilgrim paths as meeting places for people across borders, cultures, and beliefs
- further developing Trondheim as the pilgrim capital and as a welcoming and well-prepared destination for pilgrims
Through close collaboration with local hosts, stakeholders, and volunteers, we contribute to creating meaningful experiences and a seamless journey from start to destination.
The pilgrim routes are open and inclusive, offering space for reflection, nature experiences, and community—whether one walks for religious, cultural, or personal reasons.
Regional Responsibility and Collaboration
The Pilgrim Center is responsible for the pilgrim routes in the municipalities of Trondheim, Skaun, Melhus, and Midtre Gauldal. Within this region, the center works closely with municipalities, the county authority, local businesses, cultural organizations, and volunteers.
This collaboration is essential for maintaining and developing the routes and includes:
- marking and maintenance of the trails
- development of services and infrastructure along the routes
- integration of the pilgrim paths into local and regional planning
Through this work, the Pilgrim Center helps strengthen Trondheim’s role as a pilgrim capital and as the natural final destination of the journey.
Pilgrim Reception and Hospitality
Regional Pilgrim Center Trondheim is also responsible for the pilgrim reception in Trondheim—the place where many pilgrims complete their journey. In cooperation with volunteers, pilgrims are welcomed throughout the season.
The reception represents an important final encounter with the city’s pilgrim tradition, where hospitality and community are at the core. Here, pilgrims can receive guidance, practical information, and a warm and dignified conclusion to their journey to Nidaros.

We strongly recommend that you download and use our luggage label and attach it securely to your package. This helps the receiving location identify it as a pilgrim parcel and ensures that it meets the requirements to be held as poste restante beyond the standard return period.
