Hasselvika - Trondheim
Reins kloster
Day 1: (14 km) Hasselvika - Rissa
It is easiest to reach the starting point in Hasselvika by taking the "hurtigbåt" that runs between Trondheim and Kristiansund. Find departures at atb.no
The first stage crosses through somewhat demanding terrain before arriving at Rissa. After arriving in Hasselvika, you simply follow the markings that start at the dock: "hurtigbåtkai". On your way out of the former military area in Hasselvika, you follow a asphalt road before turning off towards the forest roads through the valley: Fagerdalen. After approx. 3.5 km into the hike, the path takes off on trails through the forest, over bog and later up to Blåheia. At the top, you get a fantastic view of today's destination, Rissa. Remember to take a good rest in the beautiful Gapahuk at the top of the Blåheia. The last half of the stage follows dirt roads down from Blåheia. Later, the path crosses over the river "Skauga" and carries inwards towards Rissa. The municipal center of Indre Fosen municipality.
In Rissa there is a good selection of shops and eateries that you can visit.

Day 2: (18 km) Rissa - Stadsbygd
Today's stage starts idyllically by crossing the old bridge over the "Straumen", the mouth of the saltwater lake Botn. Enjoy the fertile cultural landscape before arriving at one of the hike's highlights. Reins Kloster is one of the 26 "key places" along the Kystpilegrimsleia, and is "obligatory" to visit before walking further on the way to Stadsbygd. Read more about Reins Kloster, and its important role in Norway's history.
The road further crosses an invisible scar in the landscape. The trail crosses and follows the border of the Rissa-raset. The largest Quick Clay landslide in Norway of the 20th century. Then comes a demanding section where the trail takes off towards the hill. Here the trail follows parts of an old riding path between Rissa and Stadsbygd called the "klokkarstien". To put it mildly, a demanding uphill climb to the old resting stone: "Klokkarstolen". At this historic resting stone, you should rest your legs a little before the last stage down towards Stadsbygd. But know that the hardest part is behind you, and the road ahead follows idyllic forest roads in open landscape. The last kilometers of the stage follows a dirt road and later a asphalt road into Stadsbygd, where shops and eateries are available.
Down by the sea in Stadsbygd is the museum "Museet Kystens Arv". The last key place along the Kystpilegrimsleia before Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. It may make sense to wait with this visit until day 3.

Day 3: (18 km) Stadsbygd - Vanvikan - Trondheim
INFO: The stage Stadsbygd - Vanvikan is not marked as of 2023. There are ambitions to mark this stage during 2024. Pilgrim Center Trondheim therefore recommends taking a bus from Stadsbygd to Vanvikan or Trondheim.
When this stage is finished, it will probably go from Stadsbygd to Vanvikan over Storhaugen. It will be a great end to an already nice trip along the Trondheimsfjorden's mountain and cultural landscape.
Remember to visit the pilgrims' reception at Nidaros Pilgrimsgård to register a completed pilgrimage, as well as get a badge that gives free entry to Nidaros Cathedral and benefits in the Pilgrimage town of Trondheim

Recommended footwear
Most people choose to walk with waterproof hiking shoes along the St. Olav Ways. When the pilgrims begin to approach Trondheim, the climate changes, and it becomes wetter. It is therefore recommended for this "reconmended walk" that you use taller hiking shoes that are more suitable for walking in marshes. Note that mountain shoes tend to have stiff soles, which can be demanding on the feet when walking along roads. Taller hiking shoes with flexible soles are therefore the optimal choice for this trip. BUT! always choose well-worn shoes over new "optimal" shoes. Read more about preparations here.
Recommended Period
May to Oktober
Along the coast there is less snow, which often allows an earlier start of the pilgrimage season than on the inland St. Olav Ways. Bring good clothes regardless of the season.
