Key places along the Coastal Pilegrimage Route

Along the Coastal Pilgrimage Route you travel from key place to key place. The journey, which starts in Egersund with Trondheim and Nidaros as the destination, consists of 25 key places. The key places are stopping places of special cultural and historical value, and have been selected to give us an understanding and experience of the journey that medieval pilgrims made. The places also have good visitor qualities.

The coast was the main road

In the Middle Ages, the coast was the main traffic route. Pilgrims also traveled here. It was considered cumbersome and dangerous to travel over the mountains to Nidaros. Along the coast, there was vibrant life, boats and people. They traveled with combinations of land and water transport. On some weather-exposed stretches, they pulled smaller boats overland. Such places are called drageid. On the way from Selje and further north you will find such an eid. Larger ships could lie in wait for better weather.
